In this tough economic market we are currently facing, one would expect fewer organisations to be advertising for IT jobs. However, IT recruitment specialists, The IT Job Board, www.theitjobboard.com have seen the amount of clients advertising IT jobs remaining constant.

Through monthly monitoring of IT jobs being advertised per skill group, the areas in particular of increased activity are IT support roles and Networking skills.

The IT Job Board has seen a 6% increase in the amount of IT support jobs being advertised and demand for these professionals as well as the salary expectation continuing to rise year on year. Companies currently advertising IT support jobs are BSkyB, Wavex and Raytheon.

The demand for candidates with Networking skills has also increased by 11% from January this year, however, according to other reports the annual salary has decreased from that what was offered last year.

Other skills where the need has steadily increased or stayed the same are Project Managers, Developers and testers. This may be down to the stage of most project life cycles, however it does prove that organisations are still investing in software development projects and therefore not holding back on advertising their IT jobs.

Regardless of the initial opinion that the economic woes would drive more candidates back to the market, IT candidates are still feeling secure and positive in their current roles. 69% of 1,000 IT candidates surveyed feel their present companies position in the market place is very or somewhat secure. In particular, the female candidates feel more secure than men do.

Interestingly, 70% expect their salaries to go up over the next year despite a handful of companies cutting back their headcount and spending. Only 2% expect their salaries to go up substantially, again reinforcing the confidence the candidates have.

In contrast to the above, some reports have indicated that despite the increase of IT jobs being advertised online, the skills currently in demand are not meeting the level of expertise needed in the market and that many companies are suffering.

"This is a massive and devastating skills shortage, and it is coming when there is a surge in the number of projects that are required from IT," said Gartner vice president Andy Kyte.

"But the constraint is not from the budget but from the lack of the right people."

Another example of companies suffering is Publishing Business Thomson Reuters. They cut up to 835 jobs in the UK, with 650 were from their IT department.

They announced the IT job losses as part of a cost cutting exercise but a skills shortage is being blamed for the dismissals.

In the face of the above issues, we can conclude that the need for IT skills and IT jobs is not declining. This is great news for both IT candidates and the IT industry as it proves that faced with adversity companies are still looking to the future.
